For the seventh iteration of Saint Laurent’s Self artistic project—which aims to capture the expression of individuality through the work of photographers, artists and filmmakers—the fashion firm’s artistic director Anthony Vaccarello has invited not one but six photographers to take part, all of them under the umbrella of Magnum Photos, notes WWD. Maine-based Cig Harvey’s photographs often feature bright, saturated colors and a touch of surrealism as she tries to find the magic in the mundane. Her latest book, Blue Violet, explores grief through flowers and colors, notes Pop Photo. The project started with a request. “A friend was diagnosed with a rare form of leukemia at 36, and she went into an isolation unit, where everything is super sterile, for six weeks. It was summertime in Maine, and she was in Boston, and she said, ‘send me pictures,’” says Harvey. Read the full Story >>

Nigel Shafran made his name as a fashion photographer in the 1980s and '90s shooting for indie magazines like The Face, i-D and Harpers & Queen. In the 2000s, his work took on a different edge. He photographed simpler, contemplative settings—his girlfriend Ruth, their kitchen sink, charity shops, escalators—as he looked for beauty in familiar scenarios. He has described this latter work as “an antidote” to his fashion photography. His new book Well collates his work in fashion from the 1980s to now, notes the British Journal of Photography.
