A Pulitzer prize-winning photographer in Spain has been fined nearly €1,000 under the country’s “gag law” for an incident in which police blocked his attempts to take pictures of refugees. Javier Bauluz said he received news of the €960 fine this week, more than a year after a confrontation with police while he was documenting the arrival of thousands of migrants and refugees in the Canary Islands, notes The Guardian. Spain’s 2015 public security law, dubbed the gag law, has long been criticized by UN experts, human rights groups and journalists. Kurt Markus, a Montana-born, self-taught photographer who earned renown for his editorial and advertising work—especially for his fashion imagery—died on June 13, "surrounded by his family,” according to an announcement at his Instagram page. He was 75. “Rest in peace Kurt Markus, a true artist. Your work was precious and beautifully honest. I am honored to have been captured by your lens,” supermodel Cindy Crawford stated at Instagram. Other’s joined Crawford in paying tribute to Markus, who grew up surrounded by cattle but later realized farm work was not for him. “I was born a dreamer and I don’t know any place for a dreamer on any ranch” he stated on one occasion.
