Social News: E.U. Takes Aim at Social Media With New Law

The European Union has reached a deal on landmark legislation that would force Facebook, YouTube and other internet services to combat misinformation, disclose how their services amplify divisive content and stop targeting online ads based on a person’s ethnicity, religion or sexual orientation, notes The New York Times. The new law will force Meta, Google and other companies to explain how their algorithms work, adds The Verge. Passings: Pulitzer Prize Winning Photographer David Leeson Dies at 64

Photojournalist David Leeson, a winner of the Pulitzer Prize for his coverage of the war in Iraq, died on April 16 at age 64, reports the Abilene Reporter News. Leeson was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize three times prior to winning the award for Breaking News in 2004 for photographs, while working for The Dallas Morning News. In 2000, he began shooting video for newspaper and in 2006 he was named one of photography’s top innovators by American Photo magazine for his work in obtaining high-quality still images from high-definition video.   Read the full Story >>
