Jennie Ross Cobb, born Jennie Fields Ross —“Jen” to those who knew her best — most likely bought her first camera around 1902. But it wasn’t until later, just ahead of her 21st birthday, that she cemented her place in both Cherokee and photographic history, notes High Country News. Cobb was born in Tahlequah, Indian Territory, on Dec. 26, 1881, where her Cherokee ancestors had settled. Cobb’s time as a photographer was brief — the majority of her work comes from a three-year period between 1902 and 1905. She later became a teacher.   Read the full Story >>

Tech News: Sony's $1,200 16-35mm F/4 'Hybrid' Lens for Stills and Video

Sony has unveiled the PZ 16–35mm F4 lens, a power zoom designed for ‘hybrid creators who capture both stills and video’—but with a heavy emphasis on video capabilities, notes DP Review. This is the company's sixth power zoom lens, its second for full-frame cameras, and the first to drive both autofocus and zoom using linear motors, adds DPR. The lens’s small, light design (it weighs a little over 12 ounces) with internal zoom and focus means it can be used on a range of gimbals without the need to re-balance.   Read the full Story >>

In Focus: Georgians Recall Russia's 2008 Onslaught

Industry News: German Retailer Drops DJI Drones After Ukraine Accusations

MediaMarkt, the largest electronics retailer in Germany, recently banned sales of DJI drones after the Chinese company was accused of leaking GPS data to the Russian military, notes PetaPixel.  DJI continues to supply drones to Russia, despite a recent call by Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Mykhailo Fedorov to stop doing so and growing international pressure to isolate Russia from the global market, reports Drone XL.  According to Blynk co-founder Bolodymyr Shymanskyy), Russia is exploiting DJI’s AeroScope system to track drones within Ukraine, apparently to identify potential targets while blocking Ukraine from doing the same, adds DIY Photography.   Read the full Story >>
