Legal Brief: Arizona Bill Would Make It Illegal to Film Police Within 15 Feet
The National Press Photographers Association and other media, First Amendment and photography organizations have filed an official objection over a proposed Arizona law that would make it illegal to shoot video of police within 15 feet without their permission. The bill would also allow police officers to decide whether someone recording them inside a building is an “interference.” In such a circumstance, police could order the recording to be stopped. The bill “violates not only the free speech and press clauses of the First Amendment, but also runs counter to the ‘clearly established right’ to photograph and record police officers performing their official duties in a public place,” Mickey Osterreicher, NPPA’s General Counsel.
