Passings: Street Photography Pioneer Sabine Weiss Dies at 97

Swiss-French photographer Sabine Weiss, who chronicled social change with a unique gaze for nearly eight decades, died on December 28 at her Paris home, reports France 24. She was 97. Weiss was the last of the post-World War II French humanist photography school, which  included Robert Doisneau, Willy Ronis and Brassai. Weiss captured the condition of ordinary people in the French capital, often outdoors. She also shot portraits of artists, including composers Benjamin Britten and Igor Stravinsky, renowned cellist Pablo Casals and French painter Fernand Leger.   Read the full Story >>

Honor Roll: Nature Photographer of the Year, 2021

The top winner of this year’s Nature Photographer of the Year competition is Terje Kolaas for his images of geese migration. The Norwegian photographer, who teaches Bird Identification at Nord university and works as a nature reserve ranger at a Norwegian nature site, “is privileged to have thousands of Pink-footed Geese literally in his garden several months a year,” notes DIY Photography. Trending: No Photo In Time Capsule Under Lee Statue

More than 130 years after a time capsule was deposited in the pedestal of a statue of the Confederate general Robert E Lee, conservators in Virginia were recently able to open the long sought-after box—the 36-pound copper container, deposited in 1887, was removed on Dec, 27 after it was found sitting in water in the remains of the pedestal, notes The Guardian. A rare photograph of a deceased Abraham Lincoln in his coffin was speculated to be the prime treasure nestled in the capsule, but no Lincoln photo was found. Instead, there was a damp issue of Harper’s Weekly, dated April 29, 1865, showing a printed picture of what appeared to be an individual next to Lincoln’s body.
