Honor Roll: Historical Photographer of the Year Winners

All photos are historical photo, in the sense that they capture fragmented moments of time. But the Historical Photographer of the Year contest features images of the historic sites, landscapes and structures around the world. This year’s overall winner is Steve Liddiard for his photograph of the Whiteford Lighthouse, an unusual cast-iron lighthouse built in 1865 off the coast at Whiteford Point near Whiteford Sands, on the Gower Peninsula of Wales. Industry News: Apple Sues Israeli Spyware Maker to Block Its Access to iPhones

Apple has sued the NSO Group, the Israeli surveillance company, in federal court, seeking to hold NSO accountable for what it says was the surveillance and targeting of Apple users, notes The New York Times. Apple also wants to permanently prevent NSO from using any Apple software, services or devices, a move that could render the company’s Pegasus spyware product worthless. The lawsuit is the second of its kind — Facebook sued NSO in 2019 for targeting its WhatsApp users.   Read the full Story >>

Exhibitions: Midcentury and Modern Photography at The Met

Take your choice of time periods at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art this season: The museum is featuring the exhibition “Cruel Radiance: Photography, 1940s–1960s,” a survey of rarely-seen midcentury photos from The Met’s permanent collection along with recent acquisitions of major Japanese works. But wait there’s more: Also at the Met is “Alter Egos | Projected Selves,” which features "diverse experiments in self-portraiture” from 30 different artists, including Tom Friedman and Qualeasha Wood. Tech News: Sony Stops Production of Popular Cams Due to Chip Shortage

Sony has announced that it will halt production of five camera systems and an accessory due to the global semiconductor shortage. In a notice at its website, Sony said it stopped accepting orders from distributors and customers on November 19  for a7 II series cameras, a6400 series cameras, a6100 cameras (black models only, apparently), PXW-Z190 professional 4K camcorder and the ECM-B1M shotgun microphone, notes DP Review.
