Art News: Van Der Zee Archive Comes to the Met

The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Studio Museum in Harlem have announced that they will share ownership of the archive of James Van Der Zee, the famed photographer who over a 70-year career produced an unrivaled chronicle of African American life in Harlem. The archive, which will be housed at the Met, comprises about 20,000 prints and 30,000 negatives, notes The New York Times. The first task is to preserve and scan the negatives before they deteriorate irreversibly, said Jeff L. Rosenheim, photography curator at the Met.    Read the full Story >>

Tech News: Leica's Newest Kevlar-Wrapped 'Photojournalist' Camera

Last January, Leica introduced its  the M10-P Reporter, a Kevlar-wrapped rangefinder said to be aimed at photojournalists. Now the company has announced the Reporter Q2, which is essentially a restyled Leica Q2 that Leica says will offer “maximum precision and reliability even in the most adverse conditions.” DIY Photography calls it “sleek, pretty and discreet.” The Kevlar armor is still there, but it lacks the iconic red Leica dot on the front and the engraving on the top plate, so you don’t have to cover it with tape any longer. Publishing: The Best Photo Books of 2021

The Guardian makes its selections of the best photography books of 2021. On the list: Sebastião Salgado’s Amazônia (Taschen), which sees the Amazon “as a black and white heaven, or as a paradise in the process of being lost.” There’s also Matt Black’s American Geography: A Reckoning With a Dream (Thames & Hudson), which The Guardian calls “a tragic atlas, documenting long months on the road in impoverished tracts of the country.” Meanwhile, The Year That Changed Our World (Thames & Hudson) chronicles the pandemic.   Read the full Story >>

Media: Popular Photography Relaunched by Recurrent Ventures

Recurrent Ventures, a venture equity-backed digital media company, is relaunching Popular Photography as a digital website dedicated to photography enthusiasts.  It's the third brand Recurrent has relaunched in the past few years, as it looks to grow its digital media footprint, reports Axios. The company acquired several titles from Bonnier Corporation, including Popular Photography, in 2020. The brand, previously a monthly print magazine, has mostly been dormant the last few years. The brand’s website notes that the “new PopPhoto”  embraces “the camera in your hand, no matter what it is.”   Read the full Story >>
