Tech News: The Steadicam Air Is a Gas-Powered Monopod

Monopods have been overshadowed by tripods, gimbals, and other popular camera stabilizers, but, notes NoFilmSchool, Tiffen, the parent company of Steadicam, may be giving the monopod some new luster with its Steadicam Air. It features a gas-powered foot pedal that allows users to adjust the device’s height hands-free. The three-section carbon-fiber monopod comes in two configurations for holding either 25 pounds or 15 pounds. More than half of the short films, music videos and independent episodics being screened at this year’s SXSW Film Festival  in Austin, Texas (through March 18) were directed by women, notes Short of the Week. Tutorial: Monopod Tips and Tricks for Filmmakers

As we noted in item 2, monopods don’t get the respect they deserve. Filmmaker and YouTuber Mason Mashtare wants to change that, offering five tips for getting the most from these underrated tools. For instance, you can use a monopod to shoot low-angle tracking shots. Or combine a monopod with a backpack to shoot POV. He also suggests using a monopod to create a boom mic.
