Tony Tasset's Eye

By Peggy Roalf   Thursday November 21, 2013

The Whitney Museum of American Art recently announced the roster of artists and curators for the 2014 Biennial, which once again will include large-scale off-site installations. This just in from Tony Tasset, one of the off-site participants, who has just completed an installation in Dallas, Texas.

The thirty foot, three dimensional Eye was erected earlier this fall as part of the Joule Hotel’s expanding art collection. The giant sculpture, modeled after Tasset’s own eye, is located across the street from the hotel in a vacant lot. The Eye has created a tremendous amount of buzz throughout the region as an awe-inspiring addition to downtown Dallas.

Love, loss, frailty and beauty are themes in Tasset’s work—and his Eye resonates strongly with me, especially because of my intimate connection with the magnificent reception, and the frailty, of my own two eyes.

Tasset's work is in the permanent collections of museums across the U.S., including the Art Institute of Chicago, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; the Museum Fur Moderne Kunst, Frankfurt; and the San Francisco Museum of Art.
