Figure Drawing for Everyone

By Peggy Roalf   Friday January 23, 2015

If you’ve been inspired by recent exhibitions of works on paper [drawings, that is] and want to get your hand into making art for art’s sake, or if you're looking for a drawing workout apart from your regular studio practice, there are many uninstructed, drop-in figure drawing groups to choose from. Here’s a starter list for New York City.

Society of Illustrators currently offers two sketch nights each week. The Tuesday session features live music and “nude models with occasional accessory.” On Thursdays, it's a themed session, with models dressed to kill the theme. Open to the public, cash at the door. Society of Illustrators, 128 East 63rd Street, NY, NY. Information.

The newest kid on the grid is Jerry’s International Palette Shop, on 4th Avenue in the space formerly known as Utrecht. On Tuesday nights at closing time, they wheel the art supplies off to the side and welcome artists in to sketch for a mere fiver at the door. Jerry’s Palette Shop, 111 4th Avenue, NY, NY. Information.

Spring Studios, in SoHo, offers figure drawing sessions and classes, all week long. Last summer, the organizers hosted free figure drawing at Elizabeth Street Gardens (below), so stay tuned for information about plans for 2015. Spring Studios, 64 Spring Street, NY, NY.Information.

Studio 415, in Chelsea, offers long pose sessions on Mondays and Fridays. The length of the poses is determined by group consensus, and payment is required by the month in advance. 526 West 26th Street, NY, NY. Information.

The venerable Salamagundi Club, which started out as a sketch class in 1871, offers both short- and long-pose, artist-led figure drawing sessions. Salamagundi Club, 47 Fifth Avenue, NY, NY. Information.

The National Arts Club offers uninstructed artist-led figure drawing sessions, with nude and clothed models, as well as an instructed drawing session on Friday nights. 15 Gramercy Park South, NY, NY. Information.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Drop-in drawing in the galleries for artists of all ages. Not figure drawing per se, but drawing from master works of sculpture and art. Next session is on Friday, February 6, 6:30-8:30: Texture and Form in Oceanic Art. Free with museum admission. 100 Fifth Avenue, at 82nd Street, NY, NY. Information.

Brooklyn Art Space & Trestle Gallery. Short pose sessions on Mondays. Three-hour poses on Wednesdays and Saturdays. 168 7thStreet, Brooklyn, NY. [Gowanus] Online Coursehorse registration.

Figure Drawing Summer Sketch Group. Nola Studios, 244 West 54th Street, NY, NY. Online registration through Meetup. Information.

Figure Drawing with Simon L. weekly at the International Seafarer’s Institute and other venues as well. Online Meetup registration. Information.

Figure drawing Meetups in Metro area. Information.

Last and not least is Dr. Sketchy’s Anti-Art Group, which hosts events in a number of locations, from New York to Saskatoon and beyond. At last count, the movement has spread from London, with sightings as far as Tokyo and Sydney. Variously described as “Twisted Life Drawing,” and a “Burlesque Cabaret,” live drawing sessions are liberally fueled by thematic costuming and plenty of drinks. Find one near you here.

This just in: Illustrator Marcos Chin, whose Grand Central Catwalk poster was seen by millions of New York City commuters during the landmark's Centennial, will be signing his new children's book, Ella, this Sunday at powerHouse Arena, in Dumbo. 37 Main Street, Brooklyn, NY, 3-4 pm. The book is written by Mallory Kasdan, published by Viking, and featured in Vogue. And, fyi, Marcos was the first artist to answer the DART Q&A.
