The 2013 Cooper Union End of Year Show continues through June 15th in the historic Foundation Building and at 41 Cooper Square. The Foundation Building, freshly painted from top to bottom, has never offered a more stunning environment for work by students in the School of Art; the Irwin S. Chanin School of Architecture; and the Albert Nerken School of Engineering.

In the West colonnade of the ground floor of the Foundation Building are sculptural forms, fabricated in light-toned wood, that answer the question: What is a door? Created by second year architectural students, they range from playful zig-zags to cerebral 3D commentaries on the subject of in and out. (Below, row one.)

School of Architecture projects continue on the second and third floors, in the Houghton Gallery and adjacent studio spaces. Beautifully crafted scale models are accompanied by drawings and data so intense there should be warning labels. (Below, rows two and three.)

Throughout the building, the many disciplines of art unfold; among the strongest of these are drawing, printmaking, book arts, and painting. In a gallery of its own is an installation project whose subject is a bicycle that rides the rails—that’s right, a railroad track-hugging contraption attached to a Trek hybrid. An artistic duo, identified as Joe and Audrey, have created a faux historical construct, complete with letterpress-printed ephemera documenting the rise of The American Railbike Association.
