Design & Typography Now

By Peggy Roalf   Friday October 2, 2015

The Herb Lubalin Study Center at The Cooper Union is a comprehensive yet tiny museum of graphic design, one of the few in the world dedicated to communication arts, and available to designers, writers and researchers by appointment.

The current exhibition highlights the Center’s unparalleled collection of more than 50,000 pieces of design ephemera to tell the story of its exhibitions, publications, talks and most importantly, its archive.

The show celebrates the 30 years of the Center’s existence by moving part of the archive (30 flat files) into the exhibition space; inviting 30 designers and critics to write about one of the pieces in the collection; presenting 30 posters from the collection; and presenting 30 catalogues from the more than 70 exhibitions the Center has produced.

The Herb Lubalin Study Center of Design and Typography in the School of Art was founded in 1985 by The Cooper Union and friends of the late Herb Lubalin. Its mission is to focus on the preservation of design history through its core collection of the work of Herb Lubalin and extensive library and archive of design ephemera. The collection contains books, posters, type specimen, broadsides, book jackets, working sketches, promotional materials, and magazines by prolific and influential 20th century designers such as Herb Lubalin, Lou Dorfsman, Paul Rand, Alvin Lustig, Massimo Vignelli, Philippe Apeloig, and many others.

The Lubalin Center at 30 closes on Saturday, October 3. The Cooper Union, 41 Cooper Gallery, 41 Cooper Square, Third Avenue between 6th -7th Streets, NY, NY.
