In Focus: Reflecting on "Poverty Porn" in Appalachia

“Documentary photography is a slippery slope. You go from doing good to perpetuating stereotypes and dramatizing or fetishizing the problems.” So says Stacy Kranitz, who spent the last ten years photographing Appalachia. Her series “As It Was Give(n) to Me,” featuring at this month’s Arles photography festival, reflects on the legacy of representations of poverty in one of the poorest areas of the US, notes the British Journal of Photography. “[P]hotography has created this open wound in the area,” says Kranitz.
