In Focus: The Story Behind a Viral Photo from Aleppo

“We knocked the big green steel gate and he opened for us,” says AFP photographer Joseph Eid, describing how he found Anis, the man he photographed smoking a pipe and listening to vinyl records in the rubble-strewn ruins of his Aleppo home. Eid’s photo went viral after the Washington Post’s Ishaan Tharoor posted it on his Twitter account  recently. Eid tells BuzzFeed he wanted to track down Anis to see how he was doing several months after an AFP colleague wrote about him during the siege of Aleppo.
