Screening Room: Doc Goes Inside "The Last Bookstore"

With the rise of Amazon and the decline of brick-and-mortar bookstores, Josh Spencer’s dream of opening a used-book emporium in downtown Los Angeles could be seen as quixotic. But that only makes his story, told in the short documentary The Last Bookstore, more appealing. Director Chad Howitt’s film is “a powerful, human tale of the struggle to overcome huge challenges, and the importance of pursuing your passion,” notes Short of the Week. Spencer, a former athlete who was left a paralyzed by a moped accident, fulfilled his dream, creating not only a store but a real-life community.
