AI-AP in the News

By Peggy Roalf   Friday March 28, 2014

For the March/April issue of Photograph magazine, author and curator Vince Aletti wrote a piece on American Photography 29:

I’m a fan of Top 10 lists, anthologies, and collections of all sorts, so the American Photography annuals always appeal to me. Issue #29 (Amilus/D.A.P.), surveying editorial and personal work from 2012, is typical in its heft, range, and organization. Because the photographs are arranged alphabetically by photographer, there are some jarring juxtapositions, but the random nature of the mix suits a collection that brings together celebrity portraits, disaster reportage, sports, fashion, and meticulously styled still lifes of food. For someone who spends way too much time looking at magazines, the book is a reminder of how much I miss. Even though a lot of the photographers here are familiar (including Cindy Sherman, Jim Goldberg, Alec Soth, Nadav Kander, Tierney Gearon, and Roger Ballen), most of these 229 images, and many of their authors, are new to me. The first DART Book Prize Contest of 2014 attracted many entries, with varying degrees of information included. The artist, of course, was Andy Warhol, whose unmistakable drawing style was clearly a draw. And the winner is Erica Price of Brooklyn, who wrote:

The artist is Andy Warhol. It was a movie poster design commissioned for the film "Querelle" (1982), by the movie's director Rainer W. Fassbinder. The design of the poster itself was based on one of the photos Wahol photographed for the project (also in 1982). He would then reproduce the image using a mechanical silkscreen technique that would then be overlaid with lines drawn in by the artist’s hand. It is very much characteristic of his pop art style work of the 1980s where he incorporates elements of both hand drawn and photographic screen printing. There were a number of different color variations produced of the poster itself. Grey being the most sought after.

The film is adapted from Jean Genet’s scandalous French novel, "Querelle de Brest" (1947). By the time he made this film, his last, Fassbinder was using heavy doses of drugs and alcohol to sustain his unrelenting work schedule. He passed away June 9th, 1982. The movie premiered a few months after.

For this excellent précis on the art and the commission, Erica will receive a copy of American Illustration.

Note: One entrant referred to a small version of the poster; this was, in fact, the jacket for a 45rpm record of the film’s two songs, which were sung by actress Jeanne Moreau, and nominated to the 1984 Razzie Awards for “Worst Original Song.” Information.

Thanks to everyone who entered the DART Book Prize Contest! Stay tuned for the next installment, coming in April.
