Magnum Photos: 30 Under 30

By Peggy Roalf   Friday January 3, 2014

“Thirty Under Thirty” seems to be the most popular idea for competitions across the board, from Time, Forbes, and PDN to TED—and beyond. Now the Magnum Foundation has jumped in, with a new competition to identify some of the world’s best emerging documentary photographers. This just in:

The competition will recognize new photographic talent, and provide exposure to emerging photographers to a wider network of industry professionals. It will engage with an audience of young individuals looking to further develop their career in photography. Open worldwide to all photographers between the age of 18 and 30, entrants are invited to submit five documentary photographs from a narrative project.

The judging panel, consisting of Magnum photographers and industry professionals, will be looking for a clear storyline, technique, execution, concept, originality and the ability to successfully communicate their project. Entrants will apply via the IdeasTap website and submissions are open from 17 December 2013 to 12 January 2014. The judges will shortlist 60 entrants, and the final 30 will officially be announced at The Photography Show on Tuesday 4th March 2014.

Competition prizes include an exhibition of winning work featured in a large, printed exhibition at The Photography Show, alongside an official Award ceremony hosted by Magnum Photos. Winners will also participate in an exclusive 30 Under 30 Portfolio Review event, where they will review critiques from photography’s leading professionals from the editorial, commercial, gallery and publishing sectors.

Fiona Rogers, Cultural & Education Manager at Magnum Photos says, “Magnum Photos are excited to be partnering with The Photography Show to identify the rising photographic stars of tomorrow. Magnum are committed to supporting the next generation of documentary image makers, and this competition provides a perfect balance of exposure and opportunity for young photographers.”

Cassandra Grant, The Photography Show Event Manager, says, “We’re delighted to be giving such a great opportunity to emerging photographers from around the world. In Magnum and IdeasTap, we feel that there are no better partners to identify this definitive list of up and coming talent. We are excited to see all the entrants and are delighted to be exhibiting their work at the event.”
