Photographer Stacy Kranitz was happy when CNN.com asked if it could feature work from her project on Appalachia. The project, called “Regression to the Mean,” explores whether stereotypes accurately represent a people or place. But when Kranitz saw CNN.com’s piece, she wasn’t so thrilled: It opened up with an image of a burning cross at a Klan rally, followed by a snake-handler at a Pentecostal church. “I feel ashamed and humiliated,” says Kranitz. The news website later did a re-edit. Lesson: Work with your editors whenever possible.
