Evgenia Arbugaeva : Weather Man

By Peggy Roalf   Wednesday May 6, 2015

Last week the 2015 Infinity Award, Young Photographer, was presented to Evgebnia Arbugaeva.

Evgenia Arbugaeva was born in 1985 in the town of Tiksi, located in the Russian Arctic. She is a 2009 graduate of ICP’s Documentary Photography and Photojournalism program and since then has been working as a freelance photographer.

In her personal work, she often looks to her homeland—the Arctic, discovering and capturing the remote worlds and people who inhabit them.

For her Weather Man series, which was recently shown at In Camera Gallery, Paris, Arbugaeva spent the summer of 2013 aboard an ice breaker, visiting various meteorological stations along the Barent Sea. She met stationmaster Strava on the Russkiy Zavorot peninsula.

Slava has lived at his station for 13 years, measuring wind speeds and air pressure conditions. “Slava is a weather wizard. I think of him every time I watch the weather forecast and imagine him walking slowly beneath the Arctic stars, measuring the weather so I can know whether or not I should take an umbrella with me when I leave my apartment.”

Arbugaeva was a recipient of the Leica Oskar Barnack Award and the Magnum Foundation Emergency Fund Grant, and was selected as one of the PDN 30 New and Emerging Photographers to Watch. Her work has been exhibited internationally and appeared in publications such as The New Yorker, Le Monde, and National Geographic, among others. Information
