MoMA Studio: Beyond the Cut-Out

By Peggy Roalf   Thursday December 11, 2014

At the Museum of Modern Art, where Henri Matisse: The Cut-Outs is currently on view, artists of all ages are invited to try their hand at making art in the style of this master.

MoMA Studio: Beyond the Cut-Out, located in the Education Building, offers artist-led interactive workshops, art-making practices, and social interaction. Visitors have the opportunity to explore how Matisse’s practice of drawing with scissors emerges across different mediums in this immersive space. Especially evident is how Matisse's involvement with decorative elements, and how he created abstractions from figurative themes relates to his work as a whole.

Artist Elaine Reichek has created an installation, Le Métier de Matisse, which invites visitors to explore the play between narrative scenes, abstract cut-outs, and patterned compositions before they make their own collages by combining different materials, patterns, and colors. On the adjacent wall, artwork made by visitors is on display.

MoMA Studio: Beyond the Cut-Outs continues, Wednesdays through Mondays,  through January 11, 2015, with late hours on Fridays. Free with Museum admission. Information. The exhibition Henri Matisse: The Cut-Outs continues through February 8, 2015. Information.Museum of Modern Art, 11 West 53rd Street, NY, NY. Photos: Peggy Roalf
