Whitebox Art Center, on New York’s Lower East Side, is known for its commitment to video arts. Under the leadership of Antoine [Tony] Geurrero, it has expanded its programs in the realm of time-based art with WhiteboxLab.

This week, WhiteboxLab’s SoundLounge premiers Alcina, a Baroque opera written by George Frideric Handel in 1735 and directed by R. B.Schlather, whose recent credits include Werther for Opera Company Brooklyn, Treemonisha for New York City Opera, and Some Call Refuge at Vaudeville Park, among many others.

Alcina will be performed live with orchestra, in Italian, with projected English titles.

The last general rehearsal will take place Friday at 7 pm. The performances will take place Saturday and Sunday, September 20 & 21^st, at 7 pm. There will be a post-performance discussion on Sunday. On your way to Photoville, you can recycle e-Waste in DUMBO. The DUMBO Improvement District is teaming up with the Lower East Side Ecology Center to properly recycle your broken keyboards, ancient flip phones, busted VCRs and other electronic waste this Friday and Saturday in the plaza. The ongoing Aperture-W.Eugene Smith Memorial Fund collaboration presents a special evening to honor the Howard Chapnick Legacy.

The evening will be hosted by Mickael Itkoff of Daylight Publishing, who received the Chapnick grant in 2006 which made it possible for Daylight to go to press. The Chapnick grant has been able to give smaller organizatons an immedate boost like this. Other past Chapnick grantees Marie Arago (Fotokonbit), Ryan Libre, and Liza Faktor will talk about their projects and the grant. There will also be statements from past recipients Tamas Revesz, Shahidul Alam [Drik Photo Agency], David Spear and Richard Steven Street.

Howard Chapnick (1922-1996) is a legend of photography, the long time head of the Black Star Agency and author of the classic The Truth Needs No Ally: Inside Photojournalism.  

In 1979 with colleagues, John Morris and Jim Hughes, he founded the W. Eugene Smith Memorial Fund, which awards grants for projects in humanistic photography. Shortly after his death, the Smith Fund announced a new award in Chapnick’s name, a $5,000 grant to encourage and support leadership in fields ancillary to photojournalism. Information.
