An Armory Arts Week Preview

By Peggy Roalf   Friday March 2, 2012

In NYC, spring showers bring a dazzling array of art fairs—with a dozen now preparing their exhibits for openings next week. Here’s a preview of what’s in store from March 7th to the 11th:

The Armory Show leads the pack as the biggest in what is now known as Armory Arts Week. This year the marquee art fair features over 120 exhibitors in its Contemporary and Modern iterations, on Piers 94 and 92 respectively.

March 8-11: In addition to being able to view works from the leading international dealers, Armory guests will be able to experience the inaugural edition of Armory Film, curated by the Moving Image Fair; Solo Projects, a section dedicated to single artist presentations; and the Media Lounge, where on-site programs including Armory Film, Open Forum, the lively talk series, and Armory Performance will take place. Tickets. $60/$40/$30/$15.

Explore The Armory Show with the Art Tours program curated by Erbe Art Projects. Join in lively dialogue with exhibitors, meet other collectors and enjoy tailored tours specific to your interests. Tickets | Limited quantities. $25.

This year The Armory Show launches its first ever series of public programming in celebration of the City’s unparalleled artistic communities in a different neighborhood each night. Events include special receptions, open studios, art tours, museum discounts, performances, panels, artist discussions and parties. Information.

Volta NY 2012, in partnership with The Armory Show, is located in the Empire State Building 7 West 34th Street with a free shuttle bus to carry visitors to and from the piers.

VOLTA NY is an invitational show of solo artists’ projects and is the American incarnation of the successful young fair founded in Basel in 2005. Both Basel and New York fairs provide a showcase for current art production and relevant contemporary positions regardless of the artist or gallery’s age.

By putting the focus back on artists through exclusively featuring solo projects, VOLTA NY promotes a deep exploration of the work of its selected projects, an opportunity for discoveries that move beyond those afforded by a traditional art fair. Information.

Once again Culture Shock brings new media arts, presenting BOOM!, a celebration of technology, creativity, physicality, and art.
