Friday, April 19, 5-6pm: Out of the Jewelry Box Artists Talk at MAD Museum

Expanding the voices represented in MAD’s permanent collection, OUT of the Jewelry Box considers the importance of queer perspectives in the world of studio and contemporary art jewelry. The exhibition showcases an extraordinary gift from Ron Porter and Joe Price, who have collected and worn art jewelry throughout their forty-one-year relationship, nine of those legally married.

To celebrate the opening of OUT of the Jewelry Box, jeweler Keith Lewis will begin a conversation among the artists with a touching lecture about his groundbreaking series memorializing lives lost to AIDS and his recent work.  Artists SULO BEE, Andew Kuebeck, and Cheryl R. Riley will follow with a conversation moderated by fellow OUT artist Rebekah Frank.id Together, they will discuss how queer artists making contemporary art jewelry use different materials and visual languages to explore and communicate their identities. Info

Saturday, April 20, 1-4pm: Spring Arts Opening Day at Wave Hill

Three new exhibitions begin this weekend: the group exhibition Perfect Trouble: Queering Natureculture at Glyndor Gallery, a new site-specific exhibition by Tao Leigh Goffe in the Sunroom Project Space and a solo presentation of photographs by Ruben Natal-San Miguel in Wave Hill House. Above: Tao Leigh Goffe, "Kill Them with the No!," 2022 (detail), sound installation.

The natural world encompasses remarkable gender and sexual diversity. Perfect Trouble: presents works by artists that both challenge the ways that nature is used to uphold standards of normativity and recognize that the nature-culture divide, and other theoretical binaries, are socially formulated ideas. The exhibition brings together works by Pyarri Azaadi (formerly known as Jaishri Abichandani), Seba Calfuqueo, Young Joon Kwak, Erin Johnson, Diana Sofia Lozano, Sofia Moreno, Christopher Udemezue and Rachel Youn. Info

Saturday, April 20, 11am-1pm: Family Art Studio at Noguchi Museum

Visitors of all ages are invited to pick up art materials from our educators, and explore Isamu Noguchi and Toshiko Takaezu’s works through art-making in the galleries.

The current exhibition features Toshiko Takaezu: “Born in Hawaii to a Japanese émigré family, Takaezu received her early training in ceramics in Honolulu, and then attended Cranbrook Academy in Michigan, when it was an epicenter for adventurous modernism. Already in this early phase in her career, she was able to see correspondences between Abstract Expressionism and the spiritually infused traditions of East Asia, such as calligraphy and tea ceremony. Join Afro-American Painter Larry Rushing [left] and fine art photographer Cheryl Aden [right] for a viewing and conversationon their work and process. Larry’s still life paintings reflect a worldview that femininity is the universal source of creativity, and utilize thematic elements akin to jazz riffs.  Cheryl photographs organic life with sensuality, drama and wit, highlighting new perspectives and universal interconnectedness.  @cheryladenphotography @larryrushing

Printed Matter’s NY Art Book Fair (NYABF) is the leading international event for the distribution of artists’ books, celebrating contemporary artists’ publishing and the medium’s rich history.
